Webflow speed test & optimization

Webflow hosts your site on a CDN and handles caching, so slow Webflow sites are usually slowed down by what is on the page: big images, heavy interactions and Lottie files, custom code and third-party embeds.

What you can change on Webflow

You control images, fonts, interactions, custom code in site and page settings, and third-party embeds. Each fix below lists the metric it usually moves; check that metric in your test result to pick where to start.

  1. LCP

    Compress and convert images

Webflow can convert images to WebP or AVIF from the Assets panel. Resize hero images before uploading and avoid using a huge image as a section background on mobile.

  2. LCP

    Keep the hero image eager

Set the main above-the-fold image to load eagerly (Lazy load off in the image settings). Lazy-loading the LCP image delays it.

  3. TBT

    Trim interactions and Lottie animations

Page-load and scroll interactions run JavaScript on the main thread, and large Lottie files are heavy to download and play. Keep page-load animations short and limit them on mobile.

  4. TBT

    Audit custom code

Scripts in Site settings → Custom code run on every page. Remove unused tags, add async or defer, and move page-specific scripts to page settings.

  5. FCP

    Limit font families and weights

Each Google or custom font weight is another file before text renders. Two families with a few weights is plenty for most sites.

  6. CLS

Give embeds and images fixed sizes

Embeds such as videos, maps and forms push content down when they load. Set width and height or an aspect ratio so space is reserved.

Common mistakes

  • Background videos in the first section on mobile.
  • Stacking several third-party chat, analytics and A/B testing scripts in the site-wide head code.

For platform-independent fixes, see the speed optimization checklist, and check page weight with the page size checker.

Questions people ask

Why is my Webflow site slow?

Large images, page-load interactions, Lottie animations and custom scripts are the usual causes. Hosting is rarely the problem, because Webflow serves sites through a CDN.

Does Webflow optimise images automatically?

Webflow generates responsive image sizes for images added as image elements, and it can convert assets to WebP or AVIF. Background images set in styles don’t get responsive sizes, so keep them small.
