Squarespace speed test & optimization

Squarespace runs hosting and its CDN for you. Speed problems usually come from large images, code injection, video backgrounds and long pages packed with sections.

Runs Google Lighthouse on mobile and desktop at the same time, plus real-user Chrome data. Takes about 20–40 seconds.

What you can change on Squarespace

You control content, images, fonts and anything added through code injection. Each fix below lists the metric it usually moves; check that metric in your test result to pick where to start.

  1. LCP

    Resize images before uploading

Squarespace serves resized versions, but uploading images much larger than needed still slows things down. Around 2,500 px wide is plenty for full-width images.

  2. TBT

    Review code injection

Scripts added in Settings → Advanced → Code Injection run on every page. Remove old tracking pixels and widgets, and add async or defer to the ones you keep.

  3. LCP

Avoid video backgrounds in the first section

A background video is much heavier than an image and often becomes the LCP element. Use a still image on mobile.

  4. FCP

    Use fewer fonts

Each extra font family and weight is another download before text renders.

  5. All

    Keep pages focused

Pages with many galleries, summary blocks and embeds load a lot of content at once. Split long pages.

Common mistakes

  • Pasting large third-party widgets into the header injection area, where they block every page.

For platform-independent fixes, see the speed optimization checklist, and check page weight with the page size checker.

Questions people ask

Why is my Squarespace site slow?

Large images, video backgrounds and scripts added via code injection are the usual causes. Test your home page and a content page to see which applies.

Does Squarespace have a CDN?

Yes. Squarespace serves sites and images through a CDN, so focus on the weight of what’s on your pages rather than hosting.
